Guess what? You do not have to be debt-free if a home purchase is in your plans. Is it a good idea to start paying down any consumer debt as you plan to buy? Absolutely. But if you have some debt and you're in good standing with on-time payments, most lenders will work with you. Your lender is going to look at something called your debt-to-income ratio and while it will be one factor that they consider when assessing your loan application, student loans or something like a car loan usually won't be a dealbreaker (just don't buy that car between pre-approval and closing!).
