As of mid-2024, boomers hold around $17 trillion in home equity, which is about HALF of the nation’s total homeowners’ equity.

75% of boomer homeowners plan to pass their homes or proceeds to their kids, according to a survey from Freddie Mac. The anticipated transfer of wealth is expected to be vast and will likely reshape the finances of younger generations.

🏡 What this means for millennials:

The upcoming wealth transfer is set to bring big changes for millennials, who will inherit properties that have significantly increased in value. With today’s high mortgage rates and home prices making it tough for buyers, inheriting real estate could be a game-changer.

Freddie Mac has introduced tools to help, including specialized mortgages that allow homeowners to renovate or build ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units). These additions can create extra income and help baby boomers stay in their homes longer.

This "silver tsunami" could lead to a transfer of wealth that will lead to long-term financial stability for generations to come.
