One of the hardest parts of caregiving is knowing when to step in.

Many older adults don’t want to feel like a burden, so they may downplay struggles with memory, mobility, loneliness, or managing daily tasks.

As family members, it’s important to pay attention to the small signs:

✔ Missed medications
✔ Changes in hygiene or eating habits
✔ Increased forgetfulness
✔ Unopened mail or household clutter
✔ Withdrawal from social activities

The good news? Small conversations today can help prevent bigger crises tomorrow.

Supporting aging loved ones isn’t about taking away independence — it’s about helping them maintain safety, dignity, and quality of life for as long as possible. 💜

As Older Americans Month comes to an end, the conversation shouldn’t stop here.

Our older adults deserve more than recognition — they deserve ongoing support, respect, connection, and thoughtful planning as they age.

For families, that means paying attention now instead of waiting for a crisis later.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply start the conversation:

“How are you really doing?”
“What would make life easier right now?”
“What matters most to you?”

Those small conversations often open the door to better care, stronger family support, and greater peace of mind for everyone involved. 💜

💬 Have you heard of the 40–70 Rule? It’s the idea that when adult children are around 40 and their parents are around 70, it’s time to start talking about the future.

There are a lot of things to discuss:
🏡 Near-term and long-term living preferences
💰 Estate and financial planning
🩺 Healthcare wishes and end-of-life decisions

These topics are notoriously hard to bring up. But having these important conversations before a crisis means decisions can be made calmly — not in the middle of stress or uncertainty.

✔ Wishes are clearly understood
✔ Independence is preserved longer
✔ Families avoid rushed, emotional decisions

As a real estate agent who specializes in seniors, I’ve worked with families who have had these conversations — and those who haven’t. The difference is often clear: when expectations and wishes are discussed early, these transitions tend to feel more manageable, thoughtful, and less overwhelming for everyone involved.

If you’re around this stage of life — or know these conversations still need to happen — consider this your gentle reminder to start.

One of the hardest parts of selling a parent’s home isn’t the paperwork.

It’s the conversations between family members.

One sibling wants to renovate before selling.

Another wants to sell quickly.

Someone else struggles to let go of the memories tied to the home.

Suddenly the process becomes about much more than real estate.

I see this happen often when families begin navigating housing transitions for aging parents. The key is creating structure, communication, and focusing on shared goals.

I wrote a blog post that walks families through practical ways to manage conflict during this process.

If you want to be better prepared for these conversations, I invite you to read it.

And if you find topics like this helpful, follow my page where I share resources to help families navigate senior housing decisions with confidence.

When multiple family members are involved in selling a parent’s home, things can get complicated quickly.

Here are 3 simple strategies that can prevent conflict:

✔ Define how decisions will be made
✔ Put agreements in writing
✔ Focus on shared family goals

These small steps can make a big difference in keeping the process smooth and respectful for everyone involved.

I recently expanded on this topic in my latest blog post:

🚨 If you’re planning an estate sale for yourself or a family member, here’s my advice: pause before you purge!

Call a reputable estate sale company first and let them guide what should be sold, donated, or discarded.

One of the biggest mistakes families make is cleaning out “all the old stuff nobody wants” before bringing in a professional.

The instinct to toss worn furniture, outdated décor, and boxes from the basement is completely understandable. It can feel like you’re doing everyone a favor by clearing out what seems unwanted.

But here’s the truth: sometimes the “old stuff” is exactly what buyers are looking for.

🪑 Vintage furniture, even if it looks dated, can have real value.
🕰 Older tools, kitchenware, or garage items often have surprising resale demand.
🎨 Artwork, collectibles, and even everyday household goods can attract niche buyers.
📦 And sometimes the value isn’t obvious until someone who knows the market takes a look.

When families pre-clean too aggressively, they may unintentionally donate or discard items that could help offset moving expenses or add meaningful proceeds to the sale.

Estate sale professionals typically prefer to assess the home as-is. Context matters. How items are grouped, stored, or displayed can help them price and market everything more effectively.

As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®), I’ve helped many families navigate this process. If you’re starting to think about downsizing or planning a move, send me a DM and I can connect you with some trusted estate sale professionals who can evaluate the contents of the house, manage pricing and promotion, and take much of the emotional weight off your shoulders.
