🚨 If you’re planning an estate sale for yourself or a family member, here’s my advice: pause before you purge!
Call a reputable estate sale company first and let them guide what should be sold, donated, or discarded.
One of the biggest mistakes families make is cleaning out “all the old stuff nobody wants” before bringing in a professional.
The instinct to toss worn furniture, outdated décor, and boxes from the basement is completely understandable. It can feel like you’re doing everyone a favor by clearing out what seems unwanted.
But here’s the truth: sometimes the “old stuff” is exactly what buyers are looking for.
🪑 Vintage furniture, even if it looks dated, can have real value.
🕰 Older tools, kitchenware, or garage items often have surprising resale demand.
🎨 Artwork, collectibles, and even everyday household goods can attract niche buyers.
📦 And sometimes the value isn’t obvious until someone who knows the market takes a look.
When families pre-clean too aggressively, they may unintentionally donate or discard items that could help offset moving expenses or add meaningful proceeds to the sale.
Estate sale professionals typically prefer to assess the home as-is. Context matters. How items are grouped, stored, or displayed can help them price and market everything more effectively.
As a Seniors Real Estate Specialist® (SRES®), I’ve helped many families navigate this process. If you’re starting to think about downsizing or planning a move, send me a DM and I can connect you with some trusted estate sale professionals who can evaluate the contents of the house, manage pricing and promotion, and take much of the emotional weight off your shoulders.
