Today is International Flight Attendant Day.

The date was chosen to honor Ellen Church. She was a young Iowa nurse and licensed pilot. In 1930, she became the world's first female flight attendant. She worked for Boeing Air Transport, the airline that would eventually become United Airlines.

Almost a century later, hundreds of thousands of flight attendants now work for airlines around the world. They walk our aisles, calm our nerves, serve our coffee, and remember our names. But the part of the job most passengers never see is what they were trained for first.

Flight attendants are there for the smoke in the cabin. The medical emergencies at 35,000 feet. The hard landings. The evacuations. The moments when seconds matter.

They are also there for the small things. The lost child on a connecting flight. The first-time flyer gripping the armrest at takeoff. The veteran flying home. The grieving passenger sitting alone with a memorial program in their lap.

Today, AviationCircle wants to say thank you. To the ones who work overnights, holidays, and missed birthdays so the rest of us could get home.
