After winning the record-breaking $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot, California native Edwin Castro has invested around $10 million to purchase 15 lots in Altadena that were destroyed by the devastating Eaton Fire.

Instead of turning the properties into rental investments, Castro says his goal is to rebuild single-family homes for families who want to return to the neighborhood. He wants the new homes to match Altadena’s character and remain reasonably priced so longtime residents have a chance to rebuild their lives.

Construction has already begun on some of the homes, while plans for the remaining lots continue through the permitting process. Castro has also pledged to donate three of the rebuilt homes to the Greenline Housing Foundation, helping provide affordable housing for families affected by the disaster.

Many local residents have praised the project, saying it’s encouraging to see someone with roots in the community invest in rebuilding rather than simply buying land for profit. Others have raised concerns that outside investment could drive up housing prices, highlighting the challenges communities face after major natural disasters.

For Castro, the project is about more than real estate—it’s about helping families return home and giving a community devastated by wildfire a chance to rebuild together.
