Not so fast. One of the biggest mistakes I see homeowners make is assuming that because they repaired an issue, they never have to mention it again.

Quick Home Buyer tip! Stop opening new accounts. Stop closing old ones. And whatever you do, don't finance a car.

Most buyers know their credit score matters. Fewer understand how quickly it can move in the wrong direction when a lender is about to pull your credit.

A new credit inquiry drops your score.
A new car payment changes your debt-to-income ratio.
Closing an old card reduces your available credit and can hurt your score even if you never carry a balance.

Six months gives you enough runway to fix small errors on your report, pay down balances strategically, and let your score stabilize before a lender looks at it. Three weeks before closing does not.

The buyers who get the best rates are not always the ones with the most money. They're the ones who treated their credit scores like it matteres before they ever called a lender.
