3564 Elmwood Drive is an extremely rare Spanish Revival Duplex located in the Wood Streets Neighborhood Conservation Area. This property has been extremely well maintained over the years while original details have taken on the wonderful patina of time. The facade is classic Spanish Revival with the carved wood balcony adding a touch of California Monterey. On the inside, the ambered oak floors, wood frame windows, hand troweled plaster walls and colorful bathroom tile captivate your imagination and combine to create an incredibly relaxing environment. The dwelling on the east side of the property is a 2 bedroom, 1.25 bath while the dwelling on the west side is a 3 bedroom, 1.25 bath. The entry, living rooms, dining rooms and kitchen are very large and feel more like a standard Wood Streets home than your typically multiple-dwelling property! Each side also has a large breakfast room that can certainly work as a home office space or utility room. There are a handful of these properties located on the Elmwood Drive cul-de-sac but outside of these, there are none other in the city that I am aware of. This property is located just a mile and a half to Downtown Riverside, a few blocks from Riverside Community College, Riverside Community Hospital and the many more great amenities that have always made this neighborhood popular.

Love my Wood Streets neighbors. Received some great books today from a friend on Oakwood along with this note.

Yesterday evening I was walking down Larchwood and another friend was in her garage working on a Craftsman "Stickley" style picture frame trying to work out how to make little pyramid clavos. She then showed me a Stickley desk she made sitting proudly next to desks made by her father and grandfather! My other neighbor's bagpipes are heard frequently as he practices for his work.

People move here for the architecture, but stay for the community.

I have a lot of books on Riverside history so I'm always excited to find another. My clients gifted me this book today and there are some fascinating photos in it! If you're a collector like me you'll want to pick up a copy. They also hand made this beautiful butterfly scene, so thoughtful. I'm grateful to work with clients that are a joy to be around and that value the effort I put in for them.

The Elijah Parker Residence is a masterpiece of Andalusian Revival architecture rooted in the rugged natural setting of the Mount Rubidoux Historic District.  It was designed by Robert Spurgeon Jr, a formally trained architect at Columbia University and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris.  Spurgeon is responsible for some of the most significant Spanish Revival homes in the City of Riverside and this home is certainly among those few.  While the arched front doorway, carved Monterrey balcony, and iron accents capture your attention at first glance, the true genius of Spurgeon lies in the finer details. The more time you spend in this home, the more subtle treasures you will discover.  The property features gorgeous living and dining rooms, a luxurious remodeled kitchen and large basement currently in use as an atelier.  There is a downstairs en-suite bedroom with sitting room, two private secondary bedrooms with views of lush greenery, and a primary suite with a comfortable sunroom.  Spurgeon was also influenced by the Arts and Crafts philosophy and therefore was highly conscious of both the site of the home and its orientation.  This property is situated on the arcadian south-eastern slope of Little Rubidoux.  The natural environment of soft chaparral features sage brush, brittle bush and native oak where the local wildlife make their homes; however, the current owners have also cultivated a beautiful garden of flowering plants and fruit trees.  This gorgeous scene is the backdrop from which you can enjoy your private pool terrace.  This terrace has been decorated with over 5000 handmade Moorish-inspired tiles.  They feature a star and cross pattern depicting six species of local flora and fauna which were created by the current owners and are a welcome addition to the masterful character already found in this property.  Finally, the home’s proximity to the trails on Mount Rubidoux, the lakes at Fairmount Park and our vibrant Downtown core are another strong attraction to this wonderful historic neighborhood.

I've been doing a deep dive into Spanish Colonial Revival architecture which generally would be more accurately described as Andalusian Farmhouse or Andalusian Cortijo. I came across a book written by Washington Irving in the early 19th Century about his summer staying in the magnificent Alhambra of Granada. He traveled by horse from Sevilla to Granada and in one chapter, described the appearance of a young man he came across. It was such a great description that I plugged it into AI and asked it to generate an image, here it is!
