Redevelopment with Hillsborough Counties “Targeted Redevelopment Program”
By Patrick Skidmore II
Have you ever been driving around the Tampa Bay area and noticed that in some areas it seems like there is a whole lot of nothing going on? Well Hillsborough County has recognized this and in an effort to improve the area, they have designated four such areas as part of their “Targeted Redevelopment Program.” A program that was created to help with developing the underutilized areas with the hope that the local economy could be improved and bring jobs back to these areas.
Incentives for these projects include expedited plan reviews, permit and impact fee grants, demolition assistance, remediation programs and interior and exterior improvement plans. All of these assistance programs will make it easier for a business to move to the area and have a major economic impact on the Tampa Bay area.
The four areas identified by the program are:
- The Palm River area
- North 56th Street
- North Airport area
- The University area.
The University area has had a lot of focus lately with the redevelopment of the University Mall area. New restaurants and stores, and remodeling of the mall itself, will be an attractive center to more businesses and people coming to the area. The overall plan for the area provides a much more pedestrian and people friendly area, which is a welcome change to an area that has seen some hard times lately. The area has a lot of strong anchors from the University of South Florida, Moffit Cancer Center, James A. Haley Veterans Hospital, and Busch Gardens. Talks of Yuengling bringing a brewery hotel to the site of their brewing facility are also in the works. This is an exciting time for the whole Tampa Bay area.
