Today, we honor the firefighters, EMS professionals, law enforcement officers, and all those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

We also remember those who have died in the years since from illnesses related to the attacks, and the families and communities forever changed that day.

Twenty-five years later, we honor their courage, their sacrifice, and their service.

Early morning 2 Alarm Fire in SE

At 2:44AM, crews on C-Shift were dispatched by the Roanoke 911 Center to reports of a residential fire in the 1400 block of Greenbrier Ave SE. Due to the nature of the 911 calls, the call was upgraded to a working fire.

Firefighters on C-Shift assigned to Station 6 were the first to arrive at 2:48AM and reported a two story home fully engulfed in flames. Our team quickly went to work establishing defensive fire operations and ensuring neighboring homes were evacuated. The call was upgraded at 2:57AM to a 2 Alarm response, adding resources to assist the team on site as they worked around downed power lines and partial structural collapse.

Alongside the Fire Marshal’s Office, our team found two adults who died in the fire. We are working alongside the community and families who are affected as well as law enforcement to determine further details and the cause and origin of the fire.

After more than 24 years of service, we congratulate Captain Robert Reid “Bugg” on a well-earned retirement from the Roanoke Fire-EMS Department.

A career in the fire service is built on showing up—for your community, your crew, and those who need help most. Throughout more than two decades, Bugg did just that, leaving a lasting impact on the department and the people who had the opportunity to serve alongside him.

Residential structure fire in SE
