A 20% down payment isn't universally required to buy a home.

What you'll actually need depends on several factors, including the loan program you qualify for, the purchase price, your down payment, closing costs, and your individual financial situation.

Some eligible buyers may qualify for mortgage programs with lower down payment requirements.

That doesn't mean putting less down is automatically the best option. It means you shouldn't decide homeownership is years away based on a number that may not apply to you.
