Beautiful story. Elephants with đź’• of GOLD!
What looked like a first meeting between two elephants became a reunion powerful enough to shake a Tennessee barn.
On July 6, 1999, Asian elephant Shirley arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, after spending 22 years as the only elephant at a Louisiana zoo.
Jenny was already living at the sanctuary. When Shirley arrived, Jenny immediately reached through the steel bars with her trunk, touched Shirley and began calling to her.
Shirley responded by touching Jenny’s mouth and letting out a tremendous roar. Jenny answered with loud bellows, creating a remarkable chorus of sounds inside the barn.
The two elephants desperately tried to get closer through the bars, nearly bending them in the process. Eventually, their trunks rested across each other’s faces.
Caretakers soon discovered something extraordinary. The two elephants had been together in a circus more than two decades earlier, when Jenny was still a young calf.
The intensity of their reunion convinced those who witnessed it that this was not an ordinary introduction between unfamiliar elephants.
For the next seven years, Jenny and Shirley remained inseparable, developing a relationship the sanctuary described as resembling that of a mother and daughter.
Jenny died on October 17, 2006, but the remarkable reunion between the two elephants had already become part of their history.
Their story was later featured in the Emmy-winning documentary The Urban Elephant.
More than two decades apart had not erased the extraordinary bond they had formed when Jenny was still a calf.
