ARE YOU PLANNING TO GROW GARLIC?

You usually plant Garlic during the second to last week of October, depending on where you live, and then cover in at least 6 inches of a good mulch of shredded leaves or grass clippings, and harvest the following July.

Getting the soil ready is an important and often neglected prerequisite for successful garlic growing. Although garlic evolved in poor soils (most likely in the desert regions of Siberia), application of organic matter to the soil prior to planting will definitely increase your yield. Summer is the best time to add compost or well-rotted manure to the site where you intend to plant.

To prevent w**d growth between when you are finished with preparations and when you plant, cover the bed with black plastic or heavy mulch. You can add a little more nitrogen to your garlic bed in the spring in the form of compost or rotted manure, but lay off after that; too much nitrogen may cause premature yellowing of the leaves.

When you’re ready to plant, it’s best to divide your garlic bulbs into cloves before starting. Plant the cloves 6-8 inches apart, in rows or double rows with room to w**d in between. You may have to remove some of the mulch in the spring if it is compacted and impedes your plants’ growth. Often, though, the mulch breaks down enough over the winter to allow the garlic to push through.

Planting garlic is a joy because the days are crisp and cool and there are few pests that bother garlic. In fact, it is often used in companion plantings to protect other plants from pests.

Selecting the type of garlic you want to plant is a matter of individual taste, but be aware that there are many species of garlic out there other than the California white you usually see at the supermarket. There are dozens of exotic varieties available with names like Russian Red, Purple Stripe Porcelain, Rosewood, Kabar and on and on.

So-called “hardneck” varieties develop a flowerhead on the stem called a “scape,” which curls and then extends upward, eventually becoming woody (hence the name “hardneck”).

Garlic scapes are considered a delicacy in their own right.

They are harvested soon after they appear, and are often sold in bunches at farmers’ markets. Cutting the flower heads off of garlic when they appear also allows more of the plant’s energy to go into producing larger bulbs. Many commercial operations “pop the tops” off of their garlic for this reason.

"Ignore Your Thermostat"
With so much technology available for the home, many consumers have been slow to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to programmable thermostats. A recent survey showed that only 37 percent of homes use the devices for central heating, and 29 percent use programmable devices for central cooling. Interestingly enough, when adults without programmable thermostats were surveyed, over a third said they were interested in purchasing one.

Confusion about the uses and programmable possibilities of these thermostats may explain why consumers are moving slowly.

The Environmental Protection Agency recommends programmable thermostats as one of the easiest ways to save energy at home. With any ENERGY STAR qualified programmable thermostat, one of four pre-programmed settings allows homeowners to regulate the indoor temperature in summer and winter-even when the family is asleep or away.

For example, energy can be saved in winter by setting the thermostat to 68F during the day, and setting it lower during the work or sleeping hours. By turning a thermostat back 10 to 15 degrees for eight hours, consumers can usually save between five and fifteen percent per year on heating bills (a savings of about one percent for each degree).

The process works the same way in summer, by keeping the house warmer when the home is unoccupied and lowering the thermostat below 78 degrees only when someone is at home. The HVAC system , depenquickly return temperatures to a comfortable zone when the day starts or when family returns home.

According to EnergyStar, an average household spends close to $2,000 a year on energy bills--more than half of which goes toward heating and cooling empty and unused spaces. The EPA says that $200 to $300 per year might be saved with the programmable thermostats.

Smart thermostats are thought to be a step up from programmables. They are designed to learn the way the individual or family operates and program themselves accordingly. They work when the thermostat is used like a manual thermostat is used like a manual thermostat initially. The smart thermostat then learns the users' behaviors. This allows the thermostat to be easy to use and highly efficient. Smart thermostats may also be controlled via the internet.

It may be hard to know which is the better choice. A programmable thermostat may make sense for those who are prone to forgetting to set the thermostat or leave the AC running. It also makes sense as a energy-saving device.

A smart thermostat might be the right choice for those who have an irregular work or travel schedule as well as for those who want the ability to adjust the thermostat remotely. Some devices even detect when the home is empty, automatically switching into away-mode to save energy until someone returns.

Smart thermostats come with monitoring systems that can track energy use and, through personal online accounts, offer charts that show how much energy is used during the week. With this information, a family might be able to identify areas where energy is being wasted and adjust accordingly.

Programmable thermostats are priced as low as around $35. Smart thermostats start at round $150 and go up depending on the model and features.
