Consumer Alert, part two, and this one is close to home.

A house in Victor was advertised for rent on TikTok last week. Three bedrooms, thirteen hundred a month, six hundred dollar deposit, no credit check. The pictures looked great.

They looked great because they were stolen from the real listing. The house was never for rent. It was for sale on Realtor.com for under two hundred thousand. The agent who actually listed it had no idea her photos were being used that way until a reporter called her.

That is why these are so hard to spot. Nothing about the photos is wrong. They are real pictures of a real house. Everything around them is the lie.

We asked AI whether this was one person or something bigger. It read every video on the account, then searched the audio those videos used and turned up more accounts running the identical playbook. Homes across Upstate and Western New York. It called it a factory.

Everyone gets hurt by this. The agent loses hours chasing takedowns. The homeowner gets strangers in the driveway expecting to move in. And a renter loses a deposit and still has nowhere to live.

So stop studying the pictures, because the pictures are real. Look at the terms instead. Rent well below market. Deposit under one month. Nobody wants to run your credit. Any one of those, walk.

September is REALTOR Safety Month, and this belongs on that list right next to the open house advice.

If you have a kid heading back to school, or you're helping anyone look at a rental right now, give this three minutes.

WHEC TV asked me to show how rental scams actually work now. On camera, I created an entire listing for a house that does not exist. Fake address, generated photo, and it looked exactly like the student rentals around the SUNY Fredonia campus. It took seconds.

Here's what changed. Scammers used to steal a real listing and swap the phone number, which meant there was always an original sitting somewhere you could check it against. That's gone. The whole thing gets built from nothing now, and there is nothing to compare it to.

So stop trying to spot the fake photo. You will lose that one. Look at the process instead.

The rent is too good. The deposit is less than one month. Nobody wants to run your credit.

Every one of those is about friction. A real landlord asks for your credit report, your references, your paperwork, because they are the ones taking a risk on you. A scammer skips all of it, because anything slow costs them the money.

September is REALTOR Safety Month. Most of that conversation is about keeping agents safe in real estate, which matters. This is the client side of it, and it is running right now.
