Did you know the official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo — Bob's Hometown?
The tradition began in 1866, when residents of Waterloo organized a community-wide day to honor fallen Civil War soldiers by decorating graves with flowers and flags. Led by Henry C. Welles and General John B. Murray, the village closed businesses and gathered together in remembrance. It is inteneded to be celebrated annually on May 30th.
In 1966, the United States Congress and President Lyndon B. Johnson officially recognized Waterloo as the birthplace of Memorial Day.
For Bob, Memorial Day has always carried special meaning — not only as a day to honor those who served, but also as part of the proud history and tradition of his hometown.
