The 38th Annual HummerBird Celebration returns September 17 through 20, celebrating one of the most remarkable migrations along the Texas coast.

For a few weeks each fall, thousands of hummingbirds pass through Rockport and Fulton on their journey south. The celebration is a chance to experience that migration up close through birding trips, boat tours, photography, public bird banding, speaker programs, and more.

It is a beautiful reminder of what makes this place so special.

The water. The wildlife. The open skies. The natural rhythms that have been part of this coast long before we arrived.

For generations, Rockport has been shaped by the water.

What is now Rockport Harbor began taking shape in the 1860s, when cattle pens and a shipping wharf were established along what was then known as Rocky Point. As Rockport grew, so did its relationship with the bay. By the early 1900s, fishing, oysters, and shrimp had become central to the local economy, with fishing boats lining the harbor and seafood houses anchoring the waterfront.

Today, the harbor remains a gathering place for boaters, anglers, locals, and visitors, just steps from downtown.

It’s a reminder that in Rockport, life on the water isn’t a trend. It’s part of who this place has always been.
And it’s a tradition we’re proud to carry forward at Marea.

Rockport has always been shaped by the water. Now, a new generation is finding ways to work with it.

Oyster farming is becoming an increasingly interesting part of the Rockport story, with family owned farms growing oysters in Aransas and Copano Bays through cultivated oyster mariculture.

The industry is still young in Texas. The state established its cultivated oyster mariculture framework in 2019, creating a regulated path for farmers to grow oysters in floating cages rather than relying solely on wild reefs.

Here in the Rockport area, farms like Blackjack Point Oyster Company , Big Tree Oyster Company , and Shuck 'em Up Oyster Co. , and Key Allegro Oyster Co | Texas Oysters are putting that idea into practice, cultivating oysters in the same bay systems that have supported generations of coastal livelihoods.

It’s a fascinating glimpse into the future of the Texas coast, where working waterfront traditions, local food, conservation, and innovation can exist alongside one another.
