Why does housing cost so much?

It's not just labor and materials. Government regulations account for 26.4% of the final sales price of the average new home, adding an estimated $131,734 to the cost of a $499,500 home.

From building codes and permit fees to zoning approvals and development regulations, every added requirement increases the cost of housing for families.

If we want to make homeownership more attainable, we need policies that help builders build.
