An overhead electrical service entry carries high-voltage, high-amperage electricity into the home, so damaged sheathing is a significant safety concern! Over time, the rubber or cloth sheathing breaks down, exposing the live conductors. Both of these homes required evaluation and repair by a qualified electrical contractor to help prevent a potential fire hazard.

This was my first time seeing a bolt-on PVC-to-cast-iron cleanout, and it was made by a well-known plumbing supply company, Oatey. Do any plumbing professionals out there know about these? I could not find anything online about them. I would question the integrity of the sewage gas and water-tight seal, which will also likely be damaged if someone attempts to remove the cap.

One thing I love about this job is running into the bizarre, unique, and downright funky “solutions” homeowners and contractors come up with. More often than not, it all comes down to cost, choosing a cheaper workaround instead of fixing the problem the right way. These findings definitely keep my job interesting!

This is exactly why you get a home inspection for new construction: this issue could have gone unnoticed for months, leading to thousands of dollars in water damage and mold growth! It appears a plumbing vent was installed after the roof covering was completed; however, the plumber left the flashing inside the pipe, but the roofing crew never returned to install and seal it! Fortunately, this was caught using my drone.

In many homes, the vent simply ends in the attic. This allows excessive moisture to build up, creating conditions conducive to mold growth, insulation damage, and long-term structural concerns. This is what happens when a sewer lateral is repaired with PVC intended for interior plumbing use only! The weight of the soil above was crushing the thin-walled pipe. The sewer lateral, the underground pipe connecting your home's waste plumbing to the city sewer, requires specialized PVC designed for burial. Overall, this lateral was in rough shape, which is why it is always a good idea to include a sewer scope as part of your home inspection!
