Jackie the bald eagle has died. And the sky over Big Bear will never feel the same.
For years, millions of people watched her through nest cameras. They watched her raise eaglets with her mate Shadow. Watched her sit on eggs through blinding snowstorms. Watched her fight off predators. Watched her do what bald eagles have done for centuries, except this time the whole world was paying attention.
When she got sick, the world held its breath. When her blood levels dropped, millions checked their phones every morning hoping for better numbers. When she ate on her own again, strangers in different countries celebrated like family.
She fought through a blood transfusion from a brave eagle named Spirit. She fought through a PCV that dropped below 6%. She fought through advanced diagnostics, bone marrow biopsies, and around-the-clock care from a team of nine veterinarians who refused to give up on her.
She fought until she couldn't fight anymore.
Jackie didn't die because people didn't try. She died surrounded by people who gave her everything medicine and dedication could offer. The Ojai Raptor Center. The specialists. The volunteers. The millions who prayed.
She was never just a bald eagle. She was the bird that proved one life could unite the world. That a camera in a tree could connect strangers across oceans. That people who had never touched a feather could cry over losing one.
Shadow is still at the nest. The cameras are still on. The sky is still there. But the eagle who made millions of people look up is gone.
Fly free, Jackie. The sky was always yours. And so were we.
