🏡 Buying a Home in California While Your Spouse Lives Overseas? Watch This Carefully.
A lot of buyers don’t realize this until it’s too late.
California is a community property state, which means if you are married, your spouse may also need to sign documents during the home buying process — even if they are living outside the United States.
⚠️ Here’s where the problem starts:
Many buyers get into contract, remove contingencies, and then suddenly realize their spouse’s signatures are required from overseas.
Those signatures normally must be completed through a U.S. Consulate in their country.
📄 That process can sometimes take:
• Several weeks
• Or even months depending on appointment availability
Now imagine this:
You already have a closing date with the seller… but your consulate appointment is still weeks away.
This can:
• Delay your closing
• Create problems with the seller
• Put your deposit at risk after contingencies are removed
I’ve personally seen buyers run into serious issues because they didn’t plan this part early.
✅ The smart move:
As soon as you get into contract, immediately start planning and scheduling the consulate appointment if your spouse is overseas.
Planning ahead can save you a lot of stress, delays, and money.
