A traditional orchard with 7 apple trees underplanted with daffodils... In areas where rabbits or deer are a problem if you underplant an apple tree with daffodils they will keep away from it because they know the bulbs are poisonous. Bulbs of all natures, chives and garlic are also good, shallow rooted they suppress grass that could interfere with the nutrients gained by the tree. Permaculture Research Institute.

It's hard to believe that we haven't covered very many of our Georgia trilliums. Our plant of the year from 2017, sweet Betsy trillium (Trillium cuneatum), has been blooming for a while. This perennial member of the Liliaceae family is one of 22 (or is it 23?) different species found in Georgia – more than any other state. Earlier we featured two of the southern species which look very similar to this one, but this one's range only goes as far south as the upper Coastal Plain.
