🐾 TENANT TUESDAY: “It’s an ESA.” Okay… and? 😏😆
Somewhere along the way, people started believing that saying “Emotional Support Animal” means property management has to stop asking questions, waive every animal requirement, and immediately approve the animal.
That is not how this works. We know Fair Housing.
We know Wisconsin rental law. And we aren't afraid to ask the questions we're legally permitted to ask.
Let’s clear a few things up:
🐾 We absolutely recognize legitimate Emotional Support Animals. Fair Housing protections exist for a reason, and we take them seriously.
But…
👉 “It’s my ESA” is not always the end of the conversation.
👉 An ESA vest, ID card, registration number, certificate, or fancy document purchased from a website does not automatically prove that an animal qualifies as an assistance animal.
👉 When a disability or the disability-related need for the animal isn't apparent, housing providers may request reliable supporting information as permitted under Fair Housing guidance.
👉 And yes — we verify documentation.
👉 Legitimate telehealth care can qualify. Paying a website to put your dog's name on an “ESA certificate” is another story.
And here's one Wisconsin renters should especially know:
⚠️ Wisconsin law provides penalties for intentionally misrepresenting a disability or disability-related need for an ESA for the purpose of obtaining housing.
ESAs provide very real support to people with disabilities who need them. Trying to slap an ESA label on a pet simply to avoid a pet deposit, monthly pet fees, or an animal restriction doesn't help those people... it makes the entire process harder.
So yes, we accept legitimate reasonable-accommodation requests.
No, we do not accept “ESA” as a magic word that ends the conversation. 😉
An ESA is a disability-related accommodation... not a cheat code for the pet policy. 🐶🎮
