26 years ago I sat in a class called Intro to Creativity.

I did not have a creative bone in my body. But I had a strategy, I sat next to the prettiest girl in the room.

I’ll let you guess how that worked out.

But over a semester of projects with her, I learned something I never forgot. She never started from nothing. She’d take one idea, and another idea that had no business being near it, and blend them into something you’d never seen before.

She went on to become a nationally recognized creative writer.

And I finally understood: creativity was never a gift she was born with. It was a habit she practiced. The best things always came from blending ideas nobody thought to put together.

This one isn’t a listing.

Twenty years ago I met a man who taught me what showing up looks like. Not with words. With a two-hour commute. With staying late “for the team” and never asking for anything back.
