Please read about Prop 33...Costa-Hawkins, which C.A.R. originally sponsored and became law in 1995, has long served as a safeguard against extreme rent control measures that could destabilize our housing market. If Proposition 33 passes, local politicians and unelected boards would gain the power to impose harsh rent control policies on single-family homes. These extreme rent control measures could be imposed even without a vote from residents. This isn't just about rent control; it's about protecting property rights and ensuring that our housing market remains stable and fair.
Passing Proposition 33 would also severely reduce new housing construction, worsening the housing shortage and driving up rental costs — exactly the opposite of what California needs. We’ve had to fight this issue at the ballot twice before, and California voters soundly rejected these measures both times, signaling that they are not the solution.
But we can’t become complacent. It is a fight every time to ensure the public understands what the repeal of Costa-Hawkins would do, and when they understand its dire consequences, we win. It’s crucial that we all work together against Prop 33
