"I have spread my dreams under your feet; / Tread softly because you tread on my dreams." W. B. Yeats

This is a portion of a poem written by WB Yeats Irish poet and politician.

It is a love poem where the man offers up his dreams rather than money and gifts to the woman he loves. I'm so thankful that I have a wife who supports my entrepreneurial dreams and aspirations. 12 years of the best marriage I could ask for as of July 12th

📍 Local History Spotlight: The Legacy of Saginaw’s Historic Schaefer Hat Store

As a local Realtor, I am always diving into the historic properties, family lineages, and local storefronts that built the Saginaw Valley. But recently, a piece of our community’s legendary retail history landed right in my hands—and it comes with a deeply personal story. I was hosting an Open House in Birch Run and was blessed with a visit from my dear Aunt Elaine Trarop King. This beautiful, vintage 1960s or early 1970's Stetson Royal De Luxe Trilby hat belonged to Willard Leroy Trarop. Her father, and my paternal grand-father who sadly passed away the same year I was born. My family roots are right down the road in Birch Run, and my aunt still lives in the very home she grew up in with her mother and father. The home her mother & father built a family together in. She recently gifted me this hat and shared a beautiful, firsthand memory that perfectly captures what downtown Saginaw retail used to look like.

🎩 The Retailer:
The Largest Hat Store North of Detroit. Inside the leather sweatband, you can still see the pristine gold-leaf imprint for the historic Schaefer Hat Store in Saginaw, Michigan. Founded by Christian Schaefer, the business originally began after he worked as a clerk at the historic Heavenrich Department Store. He ventured out on his own, setting up a hat shop at the Everett House (on the corner of Genesee and Franklin streets) before eventually expanding into the historic Eddy Building.

In 1946, a WWII veteran named Wilbur Hoffman started working at the shop. He became a partner in 1960 and took full ownership in 1963. Under his decades of care, the Schaefer Hat Store became a retail powerhouse, proudly earning the title of the largest men’s hat store north of Detroit. Wilbur was a massive champion for our community, heavily involved with PRIDE (Positive Results In a Downtown Environment) to fundraise for downtown’s iconic Christmas decorations and banners. The legendary shop dressed generations of Michigan men for 90 years before finally closing its doors in 2004.

🦆 A Little Girl’s Touch:
Custom Tailored in the Mid-1960s to early 1970's Back in the mid-1960s, a premium Stetson wasn't just bought off a rack—it was a full custom experience. Willard Trarop went to downtown Saginaw to purchase this milestone hat and brought my aunt along when she was just a girl. While the shopkeeper personalized the inside lining with Willard's initials (W L T), they let my aunt step up to the counter or drawer to customize the outside look. She still vividly remembers standing in that historic downtown shop and hand-picking the vibrant arrangement of natural game bird plumage tucked into the ribbon—blending a rich, iridescent mallard duck wing feather, a striking zebra-striped jay feather, and a fiery golden pheasant breast accent.

🏡 Preserving Our Local Heritage:
What makes this piece truly remarkable is its immaculate condition. Willard loved and respected this hat proven by the fact that after 49 years of it sitting in storage it has absolutely no flaws! No moisture causing mildew & mold. No damageto the leather headband inside nor the satin. It is as though grandpa Willard put that hat up for sade keeping until next Sunday, but he passed before that Sunday. By keeping it safely tucked away inside its original interlocking-tab octagon Stetson box, he protected the fine wild hare fur felt, the pristine white satin lining, and my aunt’s custom feather selection from decades of dust and wear. The underlying factory tracking marks, the 1960s United Hatters Union Labor tag, and the crisp Schaefer gold-leaf remain completely frozen in time. I’m not selling this piece; I’m honored to be wearing it, preserving it, and keeping it right here in our community. Saginaw isn’t just a spot on a map—it’s a tapestry of incredible families, generational homes, and small-business legacies that we carry forward every day.

My Proud Legacy:
You will see me around town in my legacy hat starting around Labor Day into May as these hats are warn for cool weather not hot summer days. The heat & humidity can destroy the natural felt. I am a hat lover so look for me in my other hats through-out the year. I wish Schaefer Hat Store was still open. I could imagine myself spending many hours browsing.

I thank Jesus ✝️ for providing. I found this little surprise in my tire last night and I came in to Discount today after dropping my car off around 9pm.

The certificate paid for a brand new tire and I only paid $13+ to have it installed. The thing is I never buy the certificate because I never have the extra money. I usually have just enough $ for the two or four tires I am replacing. 🙌🏼
