A child’s body temp can rise up to five times faster than adults and they can experience a heat emergency before you know it!!
SJCFR urges all parents and caretakers to remember to do these things to help prevent a heat-related injury to a child.
• Make it a habit to look in the back seat EVERY time you exit the car.
• NEVER leave a child in a vehicle unattended, even for a short time or with the windows cracked.
• ALWAYS lock the car and put the keys out of reach.
If you are a bystander and see a child in a hot vehicle:
• Make sure the child is okay and responsive and call 911 immediately.
• If the child is not responsive or appears to be in distress, attempt to get into the car to assist the child — even if that means breaking a window. Florida’s “Good Samaritan” law protects people from lawsuits when they have a reasonable belief that a person or animal is suffering.
• Stay with the person or animal in a safe spot near the car until first responders arrive.
