As the City of St. Augustine shifts its operations into storm preparedness mode, city officials strongly urge residents to prepare for the impact of Hurricane Ian to be similar to that of Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Residents and business owners should plan for localized flooding of at least three feet above street level in low-lying areas that typically flood during king tides, astronomical tides, and Nor’easter weather events. With tropical storm force winds and possible hurricane force gusts, there is also tremendous risk and potential for power outages, tree damages, and structure damage.

The City of St. Augustine will begin sandbag operations for City residents on Tuesday, September 27, at Francis Field, beginning at 12:00pm. The sand and the bags are free of charge and there is a limit of 20 bags per person. Members of the public must provide their own transportation and shovels and are responsible for filling their own bags.

Vehicles should enter Francis Field from the west off Riberia St. and follow directions. The service will continue until 5:00pm, or until the supply is depleted.

For additional information about sandbag operations, please call 904.825.1010.

On Wednesday, September 28, beginning at 8:00am, the Historic Downtown Parking Facility will be open to the public, free of charge through Saturday, October 1, so that residents may park their cars at higher elevation. Also downtown at the same time, city-operated pay stations will no longer charge for parking for the duration of the storm.

Yard debris collection is expected to remain on schedule on Wednesday, September 28; however, other collections will be provided as weather permits. When preparing for the storm, residents are reminded to secure trash and recycling bins as they can be caught in the wind and cause damage.

Residents can find helpful information online at the St. Johns County Emergency Management website at www.SJCEmergencyManagement.org. Residents can also contact the St. Johns County Emergency Management Citizen Information Line at 904.824.5550. In addition, residents may monitor www.CityStAug.com/Ian for updates.

If your in low lying areas, please prepare and get sandbags to protect your home.
