A desert summer without a working AC? Nobody wants that. Keep your system running strong with a few simple tips before the heat kicks in.
Change the filter – A clogged filter makes your AC work harder, leading to higher bills and weaker airflow. Swap it out every month to keep things running smoothly.
Keep vents clear – Blocked vents mean uneven cooling. Make sure furniture and curtains aren’t stopping air from flowing where it should. Avoid closing too many vents as it can disrupt airflow and cause freezing.
Use ceiling fans & close those blinds – Running fans alongside your AC helps circulate cool air and takes some of the pressure off the system. When the season is warm, ceiling fans should rotate counterclockwise when looking up at the fan. This helps to create a cooling effect by pushing air downwards, generating a wind chill sensation making people feel cooler. Keeping the blinds/curtains closed. Blocking sunlight helps reduce the heat entering your home, especially through south-facing windows.
Give it a break – When you’re away, try setting the thermostat a few degrees higher. Even a small adjustment can reduce energy costs while keeping your space comfortable. Avoid turning the temperature down too low, especially during heat waves or high summer temps, as this can cause the unit to freeze. A good rule of thumb is not to set the thermostat more than 20°F+ below the outside temperature. As the saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” By giving your AC system a break and preventing it from overworking, you can avoid costly damage and keep it running smoothly. Remember, while a system can handle a 20°F difference, pushing it beyond that can cause it to freeze or even shut down. It’s better to deal with a warm 80°F than risk a completely broken unit.
Stay cool this summer – We know Southern Utah summers can get pretty toasty, so why not take advantage of some great local resources to beat the heat? Try taking cooler showers to help stay refreshed, and if you're looking to get out, there are plenty of beautiful lakes and community pools nearby for a relaxing day in the water. These simple tricks can help you stay comfortable without
