Why you have to hike before 8am in Southern Utah:

1. By 10am it’s 105°. The slickrock holds heat like a stovetop, so the trail is hotter than whatever your phone says.

2. The light. Red rock at sunrise doesn’t look like this at any other hour, and no camera really does it justice.

3. You’ll have it to yourself. Same trail at noon in July is either packed or empty for a reason you don’t want to find out.

4. You need half the water and you’re back before the day even starts.

Pioneer Park, Snow Canyon, Chuckwalla — pick one, set the alarm once, and you’ll understand why people move here.

This is the part of Southern Utah nobody puts in the brochure. It’s also the part you get every single morning when you live here.
