A BIG MILESTONE FOR RURALEDGE AND THE NORTHEAST KINGDOM!

On September 25, we celebrated the grand opening of Newport Crossing with an incredible gathering of community leaders, project partners, funders, and community members!

This $21.5 million development marks the completion of 40 new affordable and mixed-income rental homes across Newport and Newport Center, transforming former properties into places people can proudly call home.

From the beautiful transformation of the historic convent to new homes in Newport Center, Newport Crossing is a powerful reminder of what we can accomplish when a community comes together.

We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make this milestone possible, and we’re excited for what’s ahead! With more housing opportunities on the horizon, we look forward to continuing to build stronger communities and expand access to affordable homes throughout the Northeast Kingdom.

Here’s to celebrating progress, partnership, and the future of affordable housing in Vermont!

RuralEdge offices will be closed on Monday, October 12, in observance of Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

While the second Monday in October has traditionally been recognized as Columbus Day, many communities now observe Indigenous Peoples’ Day to honor Indigenous peoples, cultures, histories, and contributions. It is also a time to acknowledge the lasting impacts of colonization on Native American and Indigenous communities.

We hope everyone has a safe and meaningful holiday. Our offices will reopen on Tuesday, October 13.

Join our partners for a statewide discussion: Learn How a Land Bank Can Help Your Town!

Hosted on Tuesday, October 20th at 6:30pm

The Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD) will submit a report to the Vermont legislature on November 1, 2026 to help inform potential options for creating a statewide land bank. Land Banks can help communities unlock the potential of vacant and abandoned properties, provide technical assistance to move projects forward, and help communities meet their goals. Land banks can address all types of land including residential, commercial, industrial, agricultural, recreational, and undeveloped land for conservation.

DHCD has been meeting with countless advocates, organizations, developers, and state agencies over the last two years to create a plan that would make a statewide land bank in Vermont community driven and community centered. We are launching the first of multiple conversations with Vermonters to discuss the contents of the report and collect feedback on potential options for the creation of a land bank. Please join us online on Tue, October 20, 2026, from 6:30pm – 7:30pm.

A fresh look for Coventry Senior!

Our staff recently completed a new exterior paint job at Coventry Senior.

This unique property was redeveloped more than 25 years ago by transforming a former town hall and school into senior housing.

We’re proud of the work our turnover and maintenance crews put into caring for our properties. Our crews are IRC (Inspection, Repair & Cleaning) certified, with licensed supervisors on staff, helping ensure lead-safe practices are followed throughout our work.

A great refresh for a special piece of Coventry’s history!
