☀️ Two-Story Home AC Hack: Keep your Upstairs COMFY COOL ALL SUMMER!

If you live in a two-story house or townhome, you probably know the summer struggle:

Downstairs feels great.
Upstairs feels like the surface of the sun. 🔥

Here’s why it happens: cool air naturally settles, warm air rises, and your thermostat is usually on the first floor. If the first floor cools too quickly, the thermostat shuts the AC off before enough cool air makes it upstairs.

The fix? Help redirect much more cool air upstairs BEFORE the first floor thermostat kicks off your system. It's that simple and here's how to do it in less than 5 minutes.

Try these simple summer AC adjustments:

1. Close your basement vents completely.

2. Partially close your first-floor vents.
Set most of them about 70% to 100% closed, but leave at least one first-floor vent slightly open, usually the living room vent.

3. Fully close the upstairs bathroom floor vent. This helps push more cool air toward bedrooms instead of into a smaller bathroom space.

4. Close vents, blinds, and doors in unused bedrooms. No need to cool rooms you are not using.

5. Keep blinds closed during the hottest part of the day. Helpful Hack: Turn the blind slats upward toward the ceiling. This helps reduce sunlight from heating up your flooring, furniture, and rooms.

6. Set your thermostat and leave it alone. Do NOT turn your AC off when you leave for the day. Frequent big temperature swings can make your system work harder and make the upstairs less comfortable.

7. If the upstairs gets too cold, slightly open one first-floor vent a bit more. Do that before changing the thermostat temperature.

8. Change your furnace filter monthly. A dirty filter restricts airflow and makes everything harder on your AC system.

Think of your AC system like airflow traffic. If too much cool air “exits” on the first floor, not enough makes it upstairs before the thermostat says, “We’re done here.”

A few small vent adjustments can make a big difference in comfort, especially in two-story homes.

👉 Please take a minute today to do the following:

🏠 Inside your home

Open cabinet doors under all sinks, especially kitchen sinks and bathroom sinks on exterior walls

Let faucets drip very slowly to keep water moving

Leave basement, utility, and storage room doors open if plumbing runs through them

Make sure heating vents in those areas are open and unobstructed

Keep your thermostat set to no lower than 60°F, even if you’re away

🚿 Outside

Disconnect ALL hoses from exterior water spigots immediately

Frozen pipes can burst fast and cause serious damage. Taking these precautions now helps protect your home and avoids emergency repairs when the temperatures drop.
