More Canadians died by MAID last year than Americans died from gun homicides. — SBL
16,499 Canadians received medical assistance in dying in 2024. That’s 5.1% of every death in the country. More than 1 in 20.
15,364 Americans were killed in gun homicides the same year. In a country with eight times our population.
Brittany and I spent twenty years as psychiatric nurses. We sat with people at the end. We sat with people in the worst weeks of their lives. So we don’t say this lightly: a number like this deserves a real conversation, not a shrug.
Most MAID cases involve people whose death was already foreseeable. But the track for people who were NOT close to death grew 17% in a single year. And that’s the part Canadians should be asking questions about.
This isn’t about left or right. It’s about what a healthcare system says when “we can’t help you live well” and “we can help you die” start sitting in the same room.
