Twenty-three years later, I still vividly remember the moment my friend Glenn and I realized, over the phone, that our nation was under attack. My father, a steamfitter, had helped build the World Trade Center, and having been born and raised in Brooklyn, two paths in life could have placed me in direct danger that day. I had once considered becoming a New York City police officer and was encouraged by a family friend to join the IT department at the Port Authority, headquartered in the World Trade Center. Today, I am profoundly grateful to be here, witnessing the sunrise yet again. As I reflect on this day, I am reminded of the countless lives lost and the deep impact it had on us all. I honor their memory, and my heart goes out to those whose loved ones were taken from them simply because they were Americans. We will never forget.
