Yesterday marked 42 years since the end of passenger rail service in St. Petersburg. Did you ever ride a passenger train to or from St. Pete?

By the early 1980s, St. Petersburg’s long relationship with passenger rail was already fading, but it officially came to an end on February 1, 1984, when the Silver Meteor made its last departure from the station on 31st Street North.

The building had opened in 1963 with optimism and modern lines, serving Seaboard Coast Line trains and later Amtrak when it took over service in 1971. For years it connected locals and winter visitors to the rest of the country, especially the Northeast.

On that final afternoon the waiting room filled with travelers, railfans, and longtime residents who simply wanted to witness a piece of the city’s history slipping away. People gathered early, talking quietly, taking photos, and watching the clock as the Silver Meteor prepared for its final run. When the train pulled out, it marked the end of nearly a century of direct passenger rail service to St. Petersburg.

Afterward Amtrak shifted all west-coast Florida service to Tampa, with buses bridging the gap for Pinellas riders. The station survived but its era was over, leaving the Silver Meteor’s last departure as a symbolic closing chapter in the city’s rail story.
