When you replace your roof shingles, its required that the roof decking be re-nailed with longer nails, and the nails need to be spaced 12 inches apart. It doesn't do much good if the roofer does not get the nail into the truss or rafter. These missed nails are commonly referred to as shiners. Unfortunately building inspectors do not check for shiners on roof replacements, they only check for them on new construction.
