Recently I was asked by someone..... “my agent asked me to sign an agreement before my showings… is that normal?”
Yes, it is and it’s for your protection, not to trap you.
The agreement is called a Buyer Broker Agreement. It simply explains how your agent represents you, the services they provide, and how are they compensated. It doesn’t mean you’re locked in, and it doesn’t mean you’re buying a house that day.
The reasons why agents ask for it before a showing:
• It clearly defines who they are representing
• It ensures your agent can fully advocate for you
• It protects your interests during negotiations
• It creates transparency from the very beginning
Think of it like hiring any professional, for example.... an attorney gives legal advice or a contractor starts work, expectations are set in writing. Real estate field is no different.
A good agent should walk you through the agreement, answer every question, and make sure you’re comfortable before signing anything.
Buying a home should feel informed, not rushed.
