🌊 A Once-in-a-Generation Masterpiece of Coastal Luxury: Welcome to "LoweTide" 🌊
More than just an 11,000+ square foot estate, this cottage is the ultimate realization of a deeply personal vision, brought to life through years of patience, uncompromising global artisanship, and an elite team of builders, designers, and heritage artisans.
Here is the incredible pedigree behind the concept, building, and design of Sea Island's crown jewel:
✨ THE CONCEPT
• Ken Lowe & Julia Baker: The initial concept and personal vision for the home came straight from HGTV founder Ken Lowe and his wife, Julia. As a true titan of the design-and-home world, Lowe poured his personal eye for handcrafted luxury, flow, and structural perfection into every square inch of the 2021 custom-built property.
✨ THE VISION
• Architect Thad Truett: Collaborated with Julia Lowe to realize a "masterwork of global artisanship" at Lowetide on Sea Island, GA, designed to blend French-inspired interiors with coastal architecture. The project, featuring Louis XVI-style spaces and specialized kitchens, aimed to create a "deeply personal vision realized with uncompromising attention to quality".
• Julia Lowe spearheaded a four-year renovation of the 11,000-square-foot Lowetide Cottage on Sea Island, GA, replacing traditional beach decor with a European-inspired aesthetic. Her design features a Parisian salon style, a dedicated chocolate room, and a professional-grade custom chef's kitchen by Officine Gullo.
Julia's specific ideas for Lowetide Cottage stem directly from her background as a self-declared Francophile. This passion drove her to study as a pastry chef at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, after which she spent her time living and working overseas in Parisian restaurants during the early 2000s.
How Her Overseas Life Shaped Lowetide Cottage
• Design Philosophy: Rather than matching the Georgia coastline, she intentionally channeled European classicism. A prime example is the private study off the primary bedroom, which she explicitly modeled around Louis XVI neoclassical design, complete with French blue walls. [1, 2]
• The Kitchen Integration: Because of her classical culinary training, the estate's high-end culinary spaces were built with an international perspective. Her background influenced the addition of a primary kitchen anchored by a La Cornue range, a secondary professional-grade Officine Gullo prep kitchen, and her specialized chocolate room.
🔨 THE BUILD
Chip Evans: Masterfully executed as the general builder, Evans coordinated the complex, museum-quality construction required to handle rare imported materials and state-of-the-art residential infrastructure. Evans essentially served as both a structural engineer and a museum curator, ensuring that the 11,700-square-foot structure functioned as a fortified coastal fortress while looking like a timeless European manor.
The defining feature of Evans’ exterior work was handling the immense dead-weight of the rare clay barrel roof tiles, which were salvaged and imported from a deconstructed villa in France. Because antique, sun-baked European clay is vastly heavier and more irregular than modern shingles, Evans had to structurally reinforce the entire roof truss system to bear thousands of pounds of extra weight.
Museum-Quality Interior & Material Curation
Beyond the roof, Evans managed a complex logistics network to seamlessly integrate delicate, priceless materials shipped from heritage artisans across the globe: [1, 2]
• Delicate Plasterwork: He supervised the installation of custom, ultra-fragile ornamental wall paneling and hand-carved ceiling moldings by J.P. Weaver. [1]
• Bespoke Elements: Evans integrated imported Italian marble, museum-grade Saint Louis crystal lighting fixtures, custom hardware from P.E. Guerin, and intricate parquet flooring shipped from Foglie d'Oro in Italy.
