Dear Residents,

Thank you for your continued interest in the Fort Frederica to West Point Sidewalk Project. I am writing to invite you to a community open house where you can view the latest project materials, see the recommended sidewalk route, and speak directly with the project team.

Community Open House – Details
- Date: Tuesday, August 11, 2026
- Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. (drop in anytime)
- Location: Fort Frederica National Monument, Visitor Center Auditorium, 6515 Frederica Road, St. Simons Island, GA 31522
- Format: This is an informal, walk-in event — there is no set presentation time. Please stop by at your convenience during the two-hour window to ask questions and learn where the project stands.

As a reminder, this project was approved by voters as part of the SPLOST 2022 program. The goal is to provide a safe pedestrian connection along Frederica Road near Fort Frederica National Monument while carefully protecting the surrounding wetlands, marsh, and historic resources.

Here is a summary of where the project stands:

What Has Been Completed

1) A detailed environmental field study of the entire 0.8-mile corridor, including delineation of wetlands, tidal marsh, and jurisdictional waters using state and federal standards.
2) Protected species habitat assessments.
3) A tree inventory, including identification of specimen trees to be preserved where possible.
4) The cultural resources field survey, conducted in coordination with the National Park Service and the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office.
5) A recommended corridor alignment that minimizes impacts to marsh areas, wetlands, utilities, and historic resources, developed and shared with the National Park Service.


What Is Currently Underway

1) Coordination with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Coastal Resources Division (CRD) to verify marsh boundaries.
2) Coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers regarding eligibility under a Nationwide Permit.
3) Continued coordination with the National Park Service at Fort Frederica.
4) Preparation to advance the project into the design phase, during which detailed construction plans will be developed.


What Still Needs to Be Completed

1) Completion of state and federal permit reviews and any required public comment periods.
2) Preparation of construction plans and confirmation of the final alignment.
3) Bidding and construction, which will follow the completion of permitting and design.

Because the project involves tidal marsh, federal lands, and historic resources, the permitting and review process is detailed and deliberate. While this takes time, it ensures the sidewalk is built responsibly and in full compliance with environmental and historic preservation laws. We remain on schedule with the consultant's agreed timeline.

Here is the man that we named Calwell Street after:

John Calwell arrived at Fort Frederica with his wife in February 1736 with the very first settlers. Calwell was a candlemaker from Temple -Barin In London, and quickly set up shop here at Fort Frederica.
Calwell and his wife Constance had three children here in Georgia, and the family made their home near the fort grounds in a nice 3 story house.

Calwell's candlemaking was a great success here in the new community, as he not only produced candles for the town but exported his candles as far away as Pennsylvania and New York! With his business thriving he was able to have his own personal brick bake oven, which was a novelty in the colonies.

Calwell thrived at Fort Frederica until his death sometime around 1753.
