🌸 A Sure Sign Spring Is Almost Here in Salem 🌸

In no time at all, one of my favorite spring traditions will begin in Salem, Oregon. The cherry trees lining the Capitol Mall around the Oregon State Capitol will begin to bloom, turning the walkways into a canopy of soft pink blossoms.

The trees actually have an interesting history. Many of the cherry trees along the Capitol Mall were planted in the 1930s as part of the original Capitol Mall landscape design, created after the Capitol building was completed. The designers wanted the area to feel like a grand civic park, and ornamental cherry trees were chosen for their beauty and dramatic spring bloom.

For a few short weeks each year, those trees transform the space and remind us that winter is finally giving way to spring. Locals walk the mall, take photos, and just enjoy a moment under the blossoms.

The buds are forming now, so it won’t be long. If you find yourself downtown soon, keep an eye on those trees — Salem’s annual pink bloom show is just around the corner. 🌸
