I think I've mentioned this before but just like to remind land owners....fences lie. Yes, fences are only put where people put them. Often for convenience, for animal protection or animal prevention. Keep deer out or keep sheep in. Fences can be boundary indicators but are not actual boundaries. Boundaries are described by deeds and are legal records. If a deed refers to a fence in wording, then that fence becomes a boundary descriptor but generally fences are not included in deeds and therefore are not boundaries.
