We are truly overwhelmed by the incredible support our community has shown following the recent fire at our property.

To everyone who has reached out, donated, volunteered, shared our posts, or simply offered words of encouragement—thank you. The kindness we've witnessed from both residents and members of the greater community has been nothing short of amazing.

Because of your generosity, we have received an abundance of clothing, shoes, toiletries, and other essential items for the families who were affected. At this time, most of these families are staying in temporary housing and unfortunately do not have the space to store additional physical donations.

For those still asking how they can help, the greatest need right now is gift cards. Gift cards provide our affected residents with the flexibility to purchase exactly what they need as they begin rebuilding their lives and transitioning back into permanent housing.

We are continuing to work closely with each family to assess their individual needs. As we learn more, we will provide updates on this page regarding any specific items or assistance that may be needed in the future.

Thank you again to our residents, local organizations, businesses, and community members who have stepped up during this difficult time. Your compassion and generosity have made a tremendous difference.

Rowan County Emergency Services Provides Recovery Update Following Fire at The Grand at Julian

SALISBURY, N.C. — An important milestone in the recovery process took place today as displaced residents participated in a coordinated resource and recovery event designed to connect them with the support, services, and people who will help guide them through the difficult days ahead.

Throughout the day, residents met directly with community partners through a round-robin style process, moving from table to table to discuss their individual needs and receive assistance with applications, resources, and recovery programs. Representatives from numerous local agencies, nonprofit organizations, faith-based organizations, and community groups were present to help address both immediate and long-term needs, including housing, financial assistance, health services, and other recovery resources.

Following those discussions, residents met individually with property management and ownership representatives to review next steps, discuss available options, and begin planning for their path forward.

Yesterday’s focus was on allowing residents the opportunity to safely return to the property with firefighter escorts. For many, this was the first opportunity to see the damage to their homes, recover important documents, medications, personal belongings, and other necessities. While understandably emotional, it was an important first step in helping residents understand their situation and begin moving forward.

Today represented another small but meaningful step in the road to recovery and healing. Recovery from a tragedy of this magnitude does not happen overnight. It is a process measured one day, one conversation, and one step at a time. Our goal remains unchanged: helping every affected resident move closer to stable, permanent housing and a return to normalcy.

Community leaders and partner agencies are now reviewing the information gathered during today’s meetings and coordinating efforts to ensure the needs identified by residents are addressed. This includes not only housing and essential services, but also emotional and mental health support for individuals and families impacted by this tragedy.

What has been most evident throughout this process is the strength of this community. From the moment this incident occurred, organizations, businesses, faith-based groups, public safety personnel, and neighbors have come together with a shared commitment to help those affected.

“As we continue through the recovery process, I would also like to reiterate the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home,” said Rowan County Fire Marshal Allyson Summitt. “Smoke alarms remain one of the most effective tools for providing early warning and giving families the precious time needed to escape a fire. Taking a few moments to test smoke alarms and ensure they are functioning properly can make a life-saving difference.

This incident also serves as a reminder of why adherence to fire and life safety codes is so important. While the investigation remains ongoing, the fire protection features installed within the building operated as they were designed and required to do. These systems exist because lessons have been learned through previous fires and tragedies, and they continue to play a critical role in protecting lives.

Every code requirement exists for a reason. Behind many of those requirements is a story—a lesson learned through a fire, an injury, or the loss of someone’s loved one. Over time, those lessons have shaped the codes and standards we rely on today to reduce risk, improve safety, and help prevent future tragedies. While codes may sometimes seem burdensome, they are often written in response to lives lost and are designed with one purpose in mind: protecting people.”

Recovery will take time, and there will undoubtedly be challenges along the way. However, residents should know they are not walking that road alone. Together, community leaders, partner agencies, property representatives, and support organizations will continue working to ensure every individual and family impacted by this tragedy receives the support, resources, and care they need as they rebuild and recover.

On behalf of all of the agencies, organizations, volunteers, and community partners involved in this effort, Rowan County Emergency Services extends its sincere gratitude for the compassion, patience, and support that continue to be shown to those affected. The recovery journey is far from over, but the commitment to helping these families move forward remains unwavering.

First and foremost, thank you. The outpouring of support from our community following the fire at The Grand Apartments has been overwhelming, and it speaks volumes about the people of Rowan County.

We know many of you are eager to help, and we are grateful for that compassion. At this time, unless you are working directly with an affected family to meet a specific need, we kindly ask that you hold off on dropping off donations.

Through the incredible efforts of responders, community partners, apartment management, and local organizations, many of the immediate needs of affected residents—including medications, diapers, formula, and other essential items—have already been addressed. Today, agencies and community leaders will continue working together to fully assess the impact of this incident and identify any remaining short-term and long-term needs.

Once we have a clearer picture of those needs, a coordinated team of community leaders, nonprofit organizations, and partner agencies will help determine the most effective way for our community to provide support. We are committed to ensuring that assistance reaches those affected in a meaningful and organized manner.

In the meantime, we ask for your patience and understanding as this process unfolds. We also ask that you continue to give responders, management, and support agencies the space they need to assist residents and work through the next steps. While every offer of help is appreciated, uncoordinated donations at this stage may unintentionally create logistical challenges and hinder efforts to provide assistance where it is needed most.

Please know that the desire to help is not going unnoticed. The families affected by this fire are surrounded by a community that cares deeply about them, and we will share opportunities to support them as soon as those needs are identified.

As information continues to circulate, we would also encourage everyone to rely on updates from trusted and official sources. We understand there is a great deal of concern and many questions surrounding this incident. At this time, only minor injuries to occupants have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Out of respect for the families affected and the integrity of the investigation, we ask for patience as facts are gathered and confirmed. We will continue to share verified information as it becomes available.
