When my husband and I bought our first home, we didn’t max out our pre-approval — and that single decision ended up saving us over $200k. 🤯

As a Realtor, I often help clients stretch their budget by broadening their search outside of Charlotte. We took that same advice ourselves.

Here’s what that allowed us to do:

I’ve always valued keeping good credit.
So imagine waking up in my 20s to a score in the 500s 😩 all because of a private student loan I forgot about and wasn’t paying on.

I was devastated. Shocked. Sick 🤧

But I got back to work.

No shortcuts.
No credit repair scams.
Just paying off debt one loan and one credit card at a time.

Any extra money? Bonuses?
Straight to debt.

Once my credit cards were paid off, I made a promise to myself:
never carry a balance again.

I treat my credit card like a debit card.
Whatever I spend gets paid in full every month.

My annual statements now say:
“No fees. No interest charged.”
Because I don’t borrow money, I move it and stack rewards.

Today, I have everything a credit score is needed for —
the house, the dream car, the flexibility.
But my habits stayed… and they’re why my score is now almost “perfect”.

By looking a little further out, I was able to use about half of my pre-approval on a 4 bed, 2.5 bath home with a loft + dedicated office, plus over $30K in upgrades.
