Starting Monday, June 22nd, this program will run Monday–Thursday from 11:30am-2:00pm at Newton Community Center (306 Newton Street, Salisbury) and will have fun activities, field trips, themed weeks, and opportunities to make new connections!

Open to children ages 8–18. Any child under 8 must be accompanied by an adult while participating. Lunch will be provided by Wicomico County Public Schools.

Please note that registration is required and this is a drop-in program. Participants may arrive and leave at any time, but once they leave the center they are no longer under staff supervision. Please arrange transportation before and after the program in advance.

β€’ Memorial Day was originally called β€œDecoration Day” after the American Civil War and began as a tradition of decorating Soldiers’ graves with flowers, flags, and wreaths.

β€’ The first ceremony took place at Arlington National Cemetery on 30 May 1868 where both Union and Confederate Soldiers are buried.

β€’ The National Cemetery Administration, part of the Department of Veterans Affairs, credits Mary Ann Williams of the Ladies Memorial Association of Columbus, Georgia with being the first to express the idea of an annual date to decorate the graves of Civil War veterans with flowers.

β€’ After World War I, the holiday expanded to honor all American military personnel who died in service to our Nation.

β€’ In 1971, Memorial Day became an official federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May.
