Salt Lake City, UT - 1929 Bungalow
4 bed, 1 bath - $795,000

Two historic photos of our listing from yesterday’s post. This Wasatch Hollow bungalow was built in 1929 and was one of the first houses in the neighborhood. Notice in the photos no houses are next to it.

When this house was built most of the neighborhood didn’t exist - and for good reason - the Sugarhouse Prison was located just several block south of it (see last photo). When the current owners family purchased this house (1942) she was just a child. As you can imagine she has several memories of this period including riding her bike past the Sugarhouse Prison (now Sugarhouse park). The inmates would yell at her and her friends as they passed. She also remembers several inmates breaking out and the neighborhood going into lockdown (the prison was notorious for this as it was mostly adobe construction). The prison closed in 1952 as the neighborhood encroached on it. Crazy part of Utah history.

This neighborhood, the Wasatch Hollow neighborhood above 15th and 15th is special. You know this when you walk it, it’s lined with large trees, beautiful homes and has a quiet elegance to it. This 1929 bungalow has been owned by the same family since 1942. See that kitchen? Same kitchen since when the family purchased it. Same with the bathroom tile, built-ins, arches and wood floors. This home is like a time capsule, when you step into it you’re stepping back into another era.

Payson, UT - 1884 Second Empire
4 bed, 2 bath - $539,000

This house is located in the Payson National Historic District. Finding information about this house was challenging because it seems to be misidentified on the NRHP forms. From the records, I was able to correlate its location and structure; this house was most likely built in 1884 and is a Second Empire style.

Why a Second Empire, you ask? A signature feature of Second Empire architecture is a full wrap-around mansard roof. You can see the original part of the house and how the mansard roof extends around its entire perimeter. Later additions to this house were likely made around 1910 and feature a more traditional sloped roof structure.

The exterior of this house is well-preserved and in excellent condition. We love the exterior ornamentation and would bet that there are some pretty cool wood floors hidden beneath those carpets.

The first thing we noticed about this house is it’s use of shoulder arches throughout the interior - frankly they’re gorgeous. There’s also a large segmental arch in the basement. We also love the tastefully updated kitchen and tile work in the bathroom. The front facade with the door decorated in pilasters, a pediment and fan light is a stand out.

From the Utah SHPO structural/site information forms on this property:

This is one of four similar adjacent houses—378, 382, 386, and 390 F Street—built in 1890 for Sharon Atkinson. The house was originally a one-story Victorian cottage of pattern book design. It has a tall hip roof and a gable roofed front bay with returns. In the bay is a large window with square panes and a rough faced stone sill and lintel. A corbeled brick belt course runs across the bay at the top of the window. The front door is decorated with pilasters, pediment and fan light in the Colonial Revival manner.

The Victorian Style, materials and massing of the house contribute to the architectural character of the Avenues. The developer that built this group of houses probably chose its design from an architectural pattern book. The Avenues were an early suburb of Salt Lake City, connected to the downtown by street-cars rather than by autos as suburbs are today, and speculative building and repetitious pattern book design were common just as they are in today’s suburbs.

What a cute historic home! Welcome to the Daniel Heiner home, built in 1882. This is a national register individually listed property.

The Daniel Heiner home in Morgan is a distinguished pioneer residence that marks the
local importance of a man who, in peculiarly Mormon fashion, combined a life of religious
leadership with active entrepreneurial activity in ranching, mining, and banking, as well as significant involvement in Republican politics.

Daniel Heiner was born November, 1850, in Pennsylvania to German immigrant parents.
After conversion to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Heiner family migrated to Utah in 1859. With ten members in the family, together with all their belongings, there was no room on the one wagon for eight year-old Daniel Heiner....so he walked the 1,000 miles from Council Bluffs, Iowa eventually leading him to Morgan, Utah.

This home features a two story porch that runs the full width of the house, jig saw scrollwork brackets and carved railings and balustrades. We particularly love the fireplaces and built in cabinets. This home stands on the edge of the valley and commands an exceptional view of the valley farm lands and mountains.

A bit about me: I’m Chris Jensen, a licensed realtor in Utah with a master’s degree in historic preservation. I specialize in helping people buy and sell residential and commercial properties, particularly focusing on historic places. I also offer historic preservation consulting services and have been involved in expanding historic preservation in Salt Lake City by assisting in securing approvals for several local historic districts.

My husband and I recently adopted a baby girl, and we are enjoying being new parents. My husband is a lawyer and a Salt Lake City councilperson. We live in a Victorian eclectic cottage built in 1884 in the Marmalade neighborhood of Salt Lake. We have been working on several home projects to restore its historic features, which is a never-ending project.

During my free time, I work on restoring classic cars as a hobby, enjoy reading about history, and like to shop for antiques. Additionally, I co-host the , where we discuss historic preservation in Utah.

Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about a local landmark we just helped procure for a client. We will also return to posting historic homes for sale in the Salt Lake region.
