John grew up as the fourth of seven kids in Santa Rosa, CA, nestled among the rolling hills of Northern California’s wine country. Regular day trips and vacations among California’s hills, mountains, beaches, lakes and beautiful cities with family and friends gave him a great appreciation for the beauty that can be found in both natural and cityscape views. John’s desire to always live somewhere with a view deepened while studying, travelling and living in places like Hawaii, Tonga, New Zealand, China, Fiji, Venezuela, Mexico, the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, various national parks and some of the nation’s most spectacular cities like San Francisco, Portland, San Diego, New York City and Salt Lake City. When John’s not working or travelling, there are a variety of other ways he’ll be enjoying life in the Salt Lake Valley. You'll commonly find him outdoors, golfing, hiking, camping or just hanging out around the house, yard or park with his family. He may not be a natural handyman, but John loves working on new projects around the house. John also loves exploring the menus of local eateries. John’s greatest love among his hobbies is acting. He has Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in vocal performance with an emphasis in musical theatre and opera, so don’t be surprised when you see John on stage at some of the Salt Lake region’s best stages like Hale Centre Theatre (Sandy) and Centerpoint Legacy Theatre (Centerville). John’s career and family life were interrupted by a cancer diagnosis (Plasma Cell Leukemia) in October 2012. As he and his family endured months of chemotherapy, two bone marrow transplants and recovery spanning nearly two years, John grew to recognize more clearly than ever that each day is truly a gift that should be unwrapped, enjoyed to the fullest and used for good. John feels greater satisfaction now than ever before in the time he spends with his family and hobbies and in the important work he’s privileged to do with his clients. As John has worked shoulder-to-shoulder with clients to navigate all kinds of circumstances and complex transactions for over two decades, he has developed a simple mindset he now applies to his career with Fitness Realty: Outperform the Norm. In fact, John fully embraces his nickname, “The Abnormal Real Estate Agent.” John strives to make it clear in every interaction with his clients that he is committed to performing for them with clearer communication, better focus, greater diligence, and a more satisfying outcome than anything a “normal” agent would provide. To BUY or not to buy (and just RENT instead)? That is the question. In such a crazy real estate market, is it worth it to buy a home anymore? A LOT of would-be first-time homebuyers are asking that very question right now.

WAKE-UP CALL! Zillow has NO idea how much your home is worth.

SO MANY PEOPLE count on websites like Zillow to “check in” on their home’s value. Many even have monthly notifications with an updated “Zestimate.” But counting on the accuracy of that information when planning the timing of your next move could be a VERY COSTLY MISTAKE. Countless articles by trusted sources cite countless examples of the vast differences that exist between Zestimates and actual market values and sales prices. SO HERE’S THE ABNORMALLY REAL ADVICE — if you want to know what your home is really worth, and if now is the right time for you to sell, contact a licensed real estate agent like me. Unlike Zillow, I don’t count on outdated county records and arbitrary algorithms to determine what your home is worth. I use hard data, real-world experience and abnormally practical sense to help you arrive at an estimate of your home’s true market value. As I mentioned in Abnormal Real Estate Talk No. 1, market value is ultimately determined when a buyer and seller come to an agreement on a sales price for a home. But the expertise provided by a good agent can help set the stage for an easier sale with less need for negotiation about price because your home’s list price will be based on REALITY, NOT ALGORITHMS. I was asked last night, "What areas do you cover?" Here's the answer: the entire state of Utah. If you have real estate you need to buy or sell ANYWHERE in Utah, then John Philpott - The Abnormal Real Estate Agent is your man!

"OK, John...so you're licenced - and WILLING - to work with people who need to buy or sell real estate ANYWHERE in Utah. That can't be your preference, though. You must want to stay a bit closer to home than Cedar City and St. George in an ideal situation, right?" Well, you're right. I'm focused on a 2-hour radius from my home in the Salt Lake valley. That's most of inhabited Utah, though. That means I'll happily go (in person) pretty much anywhere within Salt Lake, Utah, Davis, Wasatch, Weber, Morgan, Tooele, Summit, Sanpete, Juab, Cache and Rich Counties. Beyond that, I'll go into Duchesne County as far east as Duchesne, Carbon County as far east as Price, Millard County as far south as Fillmore, and Box Elder County as far north as Snowville and Portage. That's about 88% of the population of Utah. 😁
