I pay for more than one AI subscription. You probably do too. Each one ships a terminal CLI now, and each CLI is a capable engineer sitting idle while you pay its salary.
The obvious move is to use all of them. The obvious move, done naively, is a mistake.
Run four assistants as equals and you get four contexts, four memories, four opinions, and no accountability. When two disagree, the tiebreaker is you. You have hired four advisors and become the secretary.
The shape I shipped instead, in Lararium (a free, MIT scaffold for a personal agentic system):
1. One spine. Your primary assistant owns the conversation, the judgment, the permissions, and the durable memory.
2. Engines on demand. Substantial code goes to a second model for cross-review, because a model reviewing its own work has the same blind spots twice. Giant contexts go to the long-context model.
3. A decision panel. For consequential calls, four models render at once with different briefs: strategist, implementer, evidence auditor, and a red team told to argue the whole approach is wrong. The panel renders for the assistant, not for you. You get one answer that names the disagreement that mattered.
4. Structural dissent. Four models agreeing is worth less than three plus a real dissenter. A panel that always concurs is a mirror.
5. Critics run read-only. Ask four models whether an approach is right and the failure mode is one of them helpfully implementing it. A critic with a pen is not a critic.
The hard-won part was billing. One CLI silently stopped honoring its subscription login and fell back to a metered API key on disk. The meter ran for a month with zero visible failure. The fix was not discipline, it was a mechanism: strip metered keys from child environments, mint any required key on a cloud project with no billing attached so runaway usage hits quota errors instead of charges, and run a scheduled probe that treats auth mode as infrastructure and monitors it like infrastructure.
A rule that lives in prose is a hope. A rule that lives in a mechanism is real.
Full write-up, including the review that caught fusion mode hanging before it shipped:
You probably pay for more than one AI subscription. The wrong move is four sovereign assistants. The right move is one spine that summons critics, reads them, and answers you once.
