How to Prepare Your Home for a Stress-Free Move in Utah

Moving day doesn’t have to feel chaotic. A little preparation before your movers arrive can make the entire process faster, safer, and easier.

At Helping Hands Moving and Maids, we’ve been helping Utah families and businesses move since 2006. After thousands of moves, we’ve learned that some of the simplest preparations can make the biggest difference.

Here are a few things you can do before moving day.

1. Declutter Before You Pack

Moving is a great opportunity to decide what you actually want to take with you.

Go room by room and separate items you want to keep, donate, sell, or throw away. The less you move, the less there is to pack, load and unload.

It can also help reduce the overall time and cost of your move.

2. Pack Before Moving Day

Unless you’ve hired professional packing services, try to have boxes packed and sealed before your movers arrive.

Label each box with the room where it belongs. Adding a short description such as Kitchen – Dishes or Primary Bedroom – Clothes can make unloading and unpacking much easier.

3. Keep Important Items With You

Moving in Utah During Fall: What Changes When Temperatures Drop?

Fall can be one of the best times of year to move in Utah. The extreme summer heat begins to fade, winter storms have not fully arrived, and many families are settled into the school year. But a September, October, or November move along the Wasatch Front comes with its own set of challenges.

Utah weather can change quickly. A morning that starts sunny and mild can turn cold, windy, or wet before the moving truck is unloaded. Higher-elevation communities can even see snow while the Salt Lake Valley remains dry.

If you are planning a fall move in Utah, a little preparation can make moving day much easier.

Is Fall a Good Time to Move in Utah?

For many households, yes.

Cooler temperatures can make physically demanding moving work more comfortable than it is during July or August. Fall can also be a good time for people whose moving dates are flexible because the busiest summer moving season is winding down.

The tradeoff is unpredictability.

By mid-to-late fall, Utah movers may encounter cold mornings, early sunsets, rain, wind, leaves covering walkways, and occasional snow or ice. Conditions can also be dramatically different between two locations on the same move.

A move from Sandy to Park City, for example, can involve a significant elevation and weather change even though the locations are relatively close together.

Check the Weather at Both Addresses

Don’t check only the forecast for the home you are leaving.

Look at the forecast for your origin, destination, and—if you’re traveling a significant distance—the route between them.

This is especially important for moves involving Utah’s mountain communities and canyons. Salt Lake City may have clear pavement while conditions near the destination are colder or wetter.

Check again the evening before the move and the morning of the move. Utah forecasts can change.

Remember That Daylight Disappears Earlier

One of the easiest fall-moving details to overlook is daylight.

A move that would finish comfortably before dark in June may run into darkness much earlier in October or November.

Whether you’re packing everything yourself or hiring professional movers to help, a little preparation can make a big difference.

Start Packing Earlier Than You Think

One of the most common moving mistakes is waiting until the last few days to start packing.

Begin with things you use the least: seasonal decorations, books, extra linens, storage areas, wall décor, and items in spare rooms. As moving day gets closer, work toward the things you use every day.

What Moving Supplies Do You Really Need? A Utah Moving Checklist

Getting ready for a move can feel overwhelming—especially when you start wondering how many boxes you need, what size boxes to buy, and whether you really need all that packing paper, stretch wrap, and tape.

After 20 years of helping Utah families and businesses move, we’ve learned that having the right supplies before moving day can make a big difference.

You don’t need every moving product on the shelf. You need the right supplies for what you’re actually moving.

Here’s a practical checklist from the team at Helping Hands Moving and Maids.

1. Moving Boxes in Several Sizes

One box size doesn’t work for everything.

Small boxes are best for heavier items such as books, canned goods, tools, and other dense belongings.

Medium boxes work well for kitchen items, toys, décor, and everyday household belongings.

Large boxes should generally be reserved for lighter items such as bedding, pillows, towels, and clothing.

One of the most common packing mistakes is putting too many heavy items into a large box. If a box is difficult for you to lift safely, it’s probably too heavy.

2. Quality Packing Tape

Moving boxes need to stay closed while they’re being carried, stacked, loaded, transported, and unloaded.

Use good-quality packing tape and securely tape both the bottom and top of each box.

Where does it go?

Clearly mark boxes containing fragile belongings.
