🍎 There’s a Century-Old Apple Orchard in the North Carolina Mountains With a Scratch Bakery That Might Be Worth the Road Trip All by Itself!

📍 Barber Orchards Fruit Stand | Waynesville, North Carolina

If your perfect fall day involves mountain scenery, bags of fresh apples and the smell of warm pastries coming from an old-fashioned bakery, Barber Orchards Fruit Stand belongs on your autumn road-trip list.

This place has roots going all the way back to 1910, when Richard Barber established the orchard. The fruit stand followed in 1932, and part of today’s bakery entrance incorporates the original rock-walled storage area once used to keep apples cool.

And then there’s the bakery. 😍🍎

Come hungry because you’ll find fall favorites like:

🍩 Apple c***r donuts
🥧 Big apple turnovers
🍎 Glazed apple fritters
🍏 Fresh seasonal apples
🥤 Apple c***r slushies
🍯 Mountain honey
🫙 Apple butter, jams and canned mountain goodies

Depending on the season, you may find more than 25 varieties of apples, with plenty available by the peck or bushel.

One important thing to know before you go: this is NOT a U-pick apple orchard. The experience is about visiting the fruit stand, shopping for locally grown apples and loading up at that bakery counter.

🍂 FALL TRAVEL TIP: Weekends can get BUSY, especially around the bakery. If Barber Orchards is one of your must-do stops, I’d arrive earlier rather than waiting until the busiest part of the afternoon.

DYK the Tryon Theatre has been in continuous operation since 1938, but they received a huge facelift in 2017? It was completely renovated with new owners, all new seating, state-of-the-art sound and projection, big screen, accessible restrooms, nice lighting and so much more. 🎉 Wakey Monkey is turning 7! 🎉

On August 23, 2019, Matt Noller opened the doors of Wakey Monkey for the very first time. Little did he know just how much this little coffee shop—and the community around it—would experience over the next seven years!

Wakey has navigated a pandemic, Hurricane Helene, and even the wildfires that impacted our area in the spring of 2025. Through all of it, Wakey has continued to be a place where friends meet, neighbors gather, and great coffee is shared. ☕️❤️

As the current owners, we are incredibly grateful to be a part of the Wakey Monkey story and, most importantly, grateful for YOU—our amazing customers. Your support, encouragement, conversations, smiles, and loyalty mean more to us than we could ever put into words.

Seven years is quite a milestone, and we couldn’t have made it this far without the wonderful community that surrounds us.
