Effective September 1, 2023, the Texas 88th legislature enacted Texas Property Tax Code 11.43(h-1), requiring appraisal districts to review each residential property with a Homestead Exemption every 5 years to confirm that it still qualifies for the exemption.

To review each residential property with a Homestead Exemption in Bexar County, BCAD will mail Homestead Audit Verifications in phases over the next 5 years. If you receive a verification letter from BCAD, be sure to submit your reply within 30 days to prevent the removal of your exemption. A little late but better late than never. The deadline to protest your property tax value is May 15th. Some people are seeing their property value shoot up this year while others are seeing their value go down but their taxes go up.

I also wanted to take a moment to mention that if you own and occupy a home in Texas, please make sure that you have filed the proper paperwork for you homestead exemption. This application does not require any sort of payment to file so please DO NOT pay someone to file this for you. Most people can file this on their own but if you need help, call the appraisal district or call your friendly neighborhood realtor.
