This week, we're joining the American Association of Zookeepers as they celebrate National Zoo Keeper week. Each day, we're highlighting some of our amazing Animal Care Specialists who continuously provide world class care to our animals.

Today, we celebrate Leo Herrera, an Animal Care Specialist in the mammals department.

How long have you worked in the Zoological field?
"I began working in the Zoological and conservational field in 1995, with a total of over 18 years of service.”

What made you want to work with animals?
"When I served in the Marines, I had the opportunity to see all sorts of wildlife from across the world. I became interested in animal and environmental conservation soon after."

What animals do you work with?
"I currently work with giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, and okapi."

What advice do you have for someone who is interested in working with animals?
"The best thing you can do is get a degree in science and prepare for a rewarding career."

Today Peter Piper Pizza - 4474 Fredericksburg Rd. in Balcones Heights hosted a Neighborhood Friends Day for school age children. Balcones Heights Police Department and Fire Department were on hand to give helpfull safety tips to the children.
