I think everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing 25 years ago today when tragedy struck us here in America. I was in the Navy, stationed in Hawaii. That morning I could not sleep. I got out of bed early and decided I would get on my computer to check my emails. A friend IM’d me to say a plane had just hit one of the Twin Towers in New York. I was shocked but surprisingly not too worried. I showered and got ready to go into work. I called my mother on my drive into work but her phone rang busy. I thought that to be odd because of call waiting. I called my sister. Her phone too rang busy. I called my younger sister and the same thing happened. I figured there must be something wrong with my phone. I called my house phone and it worked. I thought this to be very odd. I get to my ship, down to my berthing were everyone was glued to the TV, as we watched in horror has a 2nd plane hit the 2nd Tower, then minutes later we watched as both Towers fell like a stack of cards. I could not believe what I saw. I immediately ran outside to try calling home again. I was not thinking. I totally forgot one of the main phone antennas was on top of one of the World Trade buildings. It wasn’t until 3 days later that I was able to hear from my family. As soon as I got through we were told to get back inside of the ship. We were on lock down for over a week. I was beyond devastated.
I went home to New York months later, going to the Twin Towers which was now being called Ground Zero. Several months had past but dust was still in the air. I could not get close to the area because it was blocked off several streets down. A year or so had passed when I heard the news that a classmate friend of mine had perished in the 911 attack on the World Trade Towers. In disbelief I looked for her name but could not find it. Surely I thought what I had heard was wrong. Flash forward to September 11, 2011, I was in San Antonio for the very 1st time, getting ready to pick out my lot and designs for my home. I turned on the TV in my hotel room and watched the memorial. They read off her name and flashed a picture of her on the screen. I instantly broke down in tears and cried. I had miss spelled my friend’s last name when I did the search. Farah Jeudy was her name. One of the sweetest, kindest persons I had ever met, and will never ever forget.
I don’t think anyone will ever forget where they were or the details of their day of September 11, 2001. May those we’ve lost in 911 Rest In Peace and never be forgotten.
